A quantitative measure that tracks progress against a strategic goal, the executive-facing metric in any operations dashboard.
A KPI is a quantitative measure tied to a strategic goal: 'monthly active users', 'p95 checkout latency', 'support ticket resolution time'. KPIs differ from generic metrics in that they're tied to outcomes leadership cares about and reviewed on a cadence (weekly, monthly, quarterly). For SRE teams, the KPIs that matter most are the DORA four (deploy frequency, lead time, MTTR, change-failure rate), plus availability against the headline customer SLA.
Engineering teams that don't surface KPIs have a hard time defending reliability investment when product pressure rises. Quarterly KPI reports give leadership the numbers they need to decide between 'ship more features' and 'invest in the platform that ships them safely.' Pick five KPIs, automate them, and never let them go stale.
